What does your job involve?

My job role has various responsibilities which involves attending a number of committees across the council family I also chair the Seven Lochs Board which is across 2 Authorities. I hold surgeries every Monday evening across the Ward which covers several areas in the North East. We as councillors also attend community Councils which I have four and are held every 4 weeks and vary in numbers across the city.

Deal with constituents enquiries which come through in various ways i.e. Surgeries, email, or telephone on some occasions house visits if requested, these enquiries require councillors to contact various council departments and outside bodies to advocate on constituents behalf.

What motivates you?

The main reason that motivated me to become a Councillor is growing up in an area that at the time had very little amenities and was classed as an area of deprivation and seeing families struggle from one week to the next. I had a very happy upbringing living in Easterhouse but financially my parents struggled, and both had long stays in hospital with TB which added to their financial struggle. As I got older I got into politics to try and make a difference in ways that would enhance people’s lives through better housing, better schools for our children, more opportunities for further education and better local health facilities.

How do you motivate others?

As a child going through primary and secondary school my biggest issue was lack of confidence I would never put myself forward or raise my hand in class for fear of looking silly. At the age of 39 I went into further education at John Wheatley college this turned my life around it opened up new opportunities for me and gave me the confidence to make a career move which then led me into my current role as a councillor. This role has given me the platform to encourage and motivate young people to believe in them themselves and have the confidence to be what they want to be.

Tell us about your community involvement

I have been a parishioner of my local church for over forty years and have held many roles within this time.  My husband and I ran the youth club for a number of years we also helped with the summer play scheme that took place every year and I help out with the Social and fundraising committee. In my role as councillor I attend various community councils.  I am a member of the local Gym and swim at my local swimming pool at the Bridge

Who are the inspirational women in your life?

There are many women who have inspired me over the years Mary Barbour being one of them. Mary was a housewife and mother of two children who fought for people’s rights and ran a campaign in 1915 to oppose 18 evictions by marching to the Sherriff Court in Glasgow with a reported crowd of 20,000  and had the evictions reversed. She carried on her fight for social Justice after the death of her 10 month old son and helped to increase child clinic provision. Mary died at the age of 85 with a legacy of fighting for social justice to better people’s lives.

Martha from the Women’s Centre

What does your role at the Women’s Centre involve?

My role is Vice Chair of the Volunteer Management committee. I stand in for the Chairperson at meetings and I also help with agendas, arrange course work and set up user members meetings.

What motivates you?

What motivates me is seeing the end result.

How do you motivate others?

Motivating others using patience, praise and leadership.

Who are the inspirational women in your life?
Firstly my mother because she was a strong but fair woman. I also have to say my two sidekicks on the committee, Julia and Jean. Both have life skills that anyone would do well to learn from.

Tell us about your community involvement…
Since fundraising is a big part of our survival as a company, projects are always ongoing. Our big project at the moment is the 30-year anniversary – a celebration for women who have used the centre in the past and at present.

What projects are available to women at the Women’s Centre?
The project gives women a safe environment to talk. Here, there is always someone to listen (no matter how small you may think your problem might be) and if we can’t help, we will find out who can. Also, a bit of pampering is available, like facials and therapeutic massages to name a few!

How has the Women’s Centre positively impacted the women in the community?

The Centre is 30-year-olds this November. It started with volunteers and we continue to run because of the personal time volunteers give up – because they believe in the principal of the centre. You can read more about the Women’s Centre by clicking this link.

Reaching new heights for GESH charity

A team from Glasgow Fort laced up their hiking boots to climb Perthshire’s Ben Ledi mountain this weekend (Sunday 9th September) in a bid to raise £3,000 for a local charity.

The group of 70 took on the 879m hike to raise money for Greater Easterhouse Supporting Hands (GESH), a community centre that provides training, social and recreational services to young people and adults with physical disabilities and learning difficulties.

The challenge was part of an annual fundraising initiative organised by the centre team at Glasgow Fort, and involved staff from a range of retailers including Boots, Nando’s, New Look, Wagamama, River Island, Argos, Antler and Marks & Spencer.

Maureen Ferrie, founder and centre manager at GESH, said: “I can’t thank the Glasgow Fort team enough for their support. We are a self-funded community charity that relies on the generosity of others to keep our doors open.

“Thanks to the funding we have received, we are now able to continue our renovations to the centre and welcome the 600 people that come through our doors every week. It’s thanks to those like the team at Glasgow Fort that we’re able to provide continued support for those that need it.”

A total of £4930 has been raised for GESH.

Glasgow Fort is green

While customers enjoy our stores, restaurants and the cinema, there’s a whole network of systems in place that are working hard to ensure the centre is safeguarding our environment.

Glasgow Fort has a zero to landfill policy and is 100% committed to recycling – we are currently having discussions about installing a MRF (Materials Recovery Facility), which will enable us to organise our recycling even more efficiently on-site.

Soon, we will also be donating our uniforms to the Porter Protection Group initiative in Nepal – an organisation that ensures the correct mountain hiking gear is available to all mountain porters, as well as medical support and insurance.

WorldHost Award

Customer Service is essential to us here at Glasgow Fort and we aim to provide our customers with the best experience possible.

In particular, we take pride in our staff’s participation in the WorldHost Training programme which ensures excellent customer service standards throughout the entire shopping centre.

All members of the site cleaning, security and management teams were trained to precise World Host standards and to maintain customer service levels. Our output is regularly assessed by mystery shoppers, and we often conduct customer surveys to ensure we’re continually progressing our services.

We are also proud to be part of Dementia Friends. Most recently we were thrilled to be awarded the Gold Customer Service Award, which we consider a huge honour.

We believe that the pride we have in our team, and dedication we have to our customers, is what drives Glasgow Fort to be the family friendly establishment it is known as today.
