How to embrace cowboy core in 2024

Beyoncé, Barbie, Taylor Swift, stetsons, fringe and cowboy boots

It’s set to be the biggest trend of 2024: say yee-haw to cowboy core.

With Beyoncé’s newest album, Act II, embracing country-and-western roots (the first song Texas Hold ’Em is everywhere); Lana Del Rey going country on her upcoming album, Lasso, and Post Malone heading the same way, the Western aesthetic is the biggest influence on fashion at the moment.

Prairie dresses and cowboy boots have already been big for a few seasons thanks to Ganni and, fittingly, their spring-summer 2024 show was full of fringing, belts and metallic boots; Ralph Lauren is a champion of classic Americana and the catwalk was full of wide-brimmed hat, double denim and jean corsets while Pharrell Williams for Louis Vuitton (who dressed Beyoncé for the Grammys in a bolo tie and stetson) went Western big time at Paris men’s fashion week in January.

And thanks to Glasgow Fort’s huge selection of fashion and beauty – here’s how to bring cowboy core into your wardrobe…

The stetson

Taylor Swift and Harry Styles’ fans already embrace the cowboy hat at gigs (sprinkled with glitter and sequins) while Barbie’s pink stetson and flared bodysuit is the ultimate ode to the cowboy silhouette.

Next and New Look have you covered.

Big hair and cat’s eye liner

Now’s the time to show your allegiance to the drama of Dolly Parton, Lana Del Rey and Miley Cyrus. Use a dark liquid or felt eyeliner for the perfect flick and go big on rollers and lasting hold hair spray for big curls.

Head to Boots.

Suede, leather, snakeskin and embroidery

Mix up your denim and flannels with unexpected materials – suede and leather are synonymous with cowboys but snakeskin and embroidered embellishments add an elevated touch.

Fringing on everything

The simple way to instantly update your look – fringing on jackets, bags and even hats gives a fresh nod to cowboy core.

Flared, high-waisted, skinny, stretch… it’s all about the jean

Basically anything goes this season when it comes to denim: flared cut, dungarees, Daisy Duke short shorts, black and dark blue, skinny, leopard print, cargo pants…

Pop by Marks & Spencer, Next, Mango, H&M and Zara.

Prairie tea dresses

Move over the maxi, the prairie tea dresses for 2024 are pretty, cute and flirty. Slightly ruffled busts, off-the-shoulder, ribbons, delicate flower prints and chiffon are the way to go.

H&M are loving this trend.

The wide-brimmed hat

If you want to go cowboy but aren’t sure about a full-on stetson, the wide-brimmed prairie style is the way to subtly embrace the trend – it’s also perfect for the summer and festival season.

Try Asda Living and Next.

Cowboy boots

Mixing your cowboy boot with the unexpected keeps it from going too Ken. Pair yours with tailored jackets, sports socks and tube dresses.

Head to Office, schuh and H&M.

Double denim

If it’s good enough for Beyoncé… Balance your shades and have fun is the general rule for double denim – go for tones that complement each other or match. The denim bodice with a long skirt is going to be key this spring and summer.

Don’t miss Marks & Spencer, Next, Mango, H&M and Zara.

Bolo ties, big belts, cowboy neckties and other accessories

When it comes to Western-inspired accents, the chunky metal of bolo ties and Wild Frontier cowboy belts are going to be everywhere while black bootstrap leather necklaces, jaunty neckties and rattan baskets complete the look.

Swing by Warren James, H Samuel, Beaverbrooks, Zara and Mango.
